This course is very pretty and extremely well maintained by local volunteers. It is a challenging course with some long par 4 holes and many sand bunkers around the greens. The course is hilly in places and winds its way through the bushland and adjacent to farms.
Tee off on the first day was scheduled for early afternoon to allow members to arrive from Melbourne and check in at the very comfortable Tarra Motel. Day 2 was the start of the competition games and today we were counting putts on the front nine with the lowest number taking the prize. With the addition of 2 Par 3 holes for girls and boys for nearest the Pin. This proved difficult and only two members recorded an entry on the card this day goes to show that it was not an easy course. As we generally had the course to ourselves for the duration of our stay we were able to tee off from both the 1st and 10th tees so that we finished in time for `Happy Hour`.
Being fairly quiet at the course we were able to stop for a lunch break. The Yarram club are a very friendly group and were ready and willing to assist us with lunch orders and cups of coffee. Day 3 was the final day and the competition was Ambrose with 5 teams of 3 players. 18 holes were played by all with a very close result at the end only 8 points separating the 5 teams. We also played the 2 missing nearest the pins again and this time had names on the cards.
For those with some spare time, a visit to the nearby Tarra Bulga National Park was not to be missed. Unfortunately the recent bushfires had caused some damage but the Park is still a wonderful place to visit.
Each afternoon around 5.00pm, we gathered around the outdoor table for 'Happy Hour'. This was the necessary pre-cursor to dinner and gave us the opportunity to relate the days golfing or other activities highlights and lowlights.
Following 'Happy Hour' we prepared for the evening dinner. We dined extremely lavishly in turn at both local hotels in the main street and the Country Club Bistro.
All our meals were of generous portion, very well presented and reasonably priced. Service from all the eateries and local shops in general was efficient and friendly and we can recommend Yarram to any other Probus club wishing for a very pleasant trip away.
After dinner at the Glasshouse, presentations were made for men's and ladies nearest to the pin, putting totals and Ambrose team results. A special draw was made for the non golfers too! The winners of the competitions were, Lowest Puts first 9 holes Ted Buick, Nearest the Pin Pat Adams, and Barbara May, Ted Buick, the Ambrose competition was won by the team consisting of Ted Buick, Terry Russell and Pat Adams. Congratulations to all the winners.
Our special thanks to Ted and Barbara for organising this trip away. What a terrific time we had away at Yarram. We look forward to our next trip, golf trips don't come around soon enough.
