On Friday 6/11/2014 club members visited the new Royal Children's Hospital in Flemington Road which was opened by HRH Queen Elizabeth in 2012. We were met by club member Denise Mudie, Secretary of the RCH Auxiliary Executive and an RCH `Living Treasure` who introduced us to Craig Wright the Auxiliaries Coordinator who took us on a one hour tour of the public areas in the hospital. The art displays and meerkat enclosure were fascinating. Following the tour we enjoyed lunch in one of the cafes in the hospital. After lunch four of us visited the Percy Grainger Museum at the Melbourne University School of Music in nearby Royal Parade. Thank you Rita and Denise for a terrific outing.
Visit to the Victoria Police Museum, 24th July 2014.

On Thursday 24/07/2014 our club visited the Victoria Police Museum which is located in the World Trade Centre, off Flinders Street. The museum contains Australia's largest collection of Kelly Gang armour as well as a wide variety of CSI forensic information and material. It was an informative look at the history of policing and in particular the Russell Street bombing. The car wreck in the glass case was confronting and the work that went into the investigation to arrest the culprits was fascinating. We gained an insight into the social history of policing, stories of some of the shady underworld figures who lurked around Melbourne streets in the 1920's and learnt what life was like as a police officer in the 19th century and the diversity of policing now in the 21st century. We had a delightful day and a nice lunch at The Wharf Hotel in Docklands afterwards.

Visit to the Old Melbourne Gaol, 25th July 2013.
(Photos and commentary courtesy of John Whitwell.)
On the 25th of July members of our club had a most interesting visit to the Old Melbourne Gaol, followed by a re – enactment of the trial
of Ned Kelly in the old Magistrates Court. Alan Taylor played the role of Ned Kelly, John Matthews played Judge Barry, Robin Bray was
prosecutor, and Richard Connley was counsel for the defence. Other members of our group assisted in playing supporting roles – it was a
lot of fun – and poor old Ned was found guilty again.
This was followed by an excellent buffet lunch at ‘The Terrace on
Exhibition Street‘.

(Photos and commentary courtesy of John Whitwell.)
On Friday the 8th February 2013, 28 members of our club visited the Mount Waverley Bowling Club where we once again enjoyed the hospitality of its members. After lots of fun, laughs and sometimes frustration in trying to master the basics of lawn bowls, we retreated to the clubrooms where we continued our social evening with drinks and a most enjoyable barbeque meal. A big thank you to John Bridgland and his fellow bowling club members for making the evening such a success.
Visit to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute on 31st July 2012.
(Photos and commentary courtesy of John Whitwell.)
On Tuesday 31st July 2012 we visited the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Parkville where we were given a history of the
Institute by Mr. Murray Jeffs, the Institute Secretary. We then split into two groups and were taken on tours of the laboratories of the
Structural Biology Division by Dr. Doug Fairlie, Head of the Division, and to the Development and Cancer Division by Dr. Bilal Sheikh. Both
Divisions are considered world leaders in their particular field. It was both well presented and enlightening. It was explained that the
research conducted at the Institute is aimed at finding new treatments, including:-
- Investigating cells at the origin of breast, lung and ovarian cancers.
- Investigating how hormones needed for blood cell production can go awry and cause inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis treatments.
- Improving the understanding of the malaria parasite which has led to the development of two vaccines currently in clinical trials.
Past discoveries include:-
- Identifying the hormones that control white blood cell development, helping ten million cancer patients recover from chemotherapy.
- Revolutionising stem cell transplants.
- Treating chronic inflammatory diseases with drugs that suppress abnormal immune responses which is still the gold standard used today.
- Developing the procedure that uses eggs to grow influenza virus in sufficient amounts for making flu vaccines.
Group members found the tour extremely interesting and a very enjoyable day. After the tour we had lunch at the William Angliss Training Centre.

Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Museum, 29th March 2012.
(Photos and commentary courtesy of Alan Taylor.)
The tour group met in the grand main foyer where we were greeted by our tour guides John and Geoff (previous Presidents of the College). We were given a very interesting account of the history of the College and the site upon which it is built. We then toured the historically significant medical library, the fascinating surgical museum, the Skills and Education Centre, the beautiful Hailes room and the large council room. The tour showcased the building's architecture, surgical instruments from the 19th and 20th centuries, impressive portrait collection, furniture, ceramics and the college mace. John and Geoff shared their extensive knowledge with us on early medical techniques and explained (in sometimes perhaps bloody and confronting detail) how some of the surgical instruments were used. The Skills and Education Centre has the capacity to hold multiple training courses each week. All health specialists, paramedical staff and students are encouraged to utilise the centre for their teaching and practice of skills. After the tour we enjoyed lunch at the Treasury Cafe nearby. A very interesting and enjoyable outing. Thank you John and Barbara.
