PROBUS 500 CARD TOURNAMENT, 4th August 2014

Photos and commentary courtesy of Pam Cotton.

Forty players from six clubs played in the Wheelers Hill Probus 500 Card Tournament on 4th August. We had an astonishing day, with everyone so happy and ready to play cards. Freda Butler filled in for Syndal, but despite our generosity, it could not get Syndalto the winning post!
To make the day perfect, our Wheelers Hill "Hasbeens" won the Champion Team event, with proud Captain Brian Brown, David Cotton, Bill Dair and Alan Taylor recording 13 wins in 16 games, though winning on points alone by just 150 points. Other winners were Best Pair Joyce Batten and Gloria Lewis (Forest Hill); Most Jokers Pat Robertson (Narre Warren) 18 and second our Lyn Bate 17.
Our President, Jenny, presented the prizes which included a lucky door prize donated by Ian Innes; a lucky team; plus a $50 voucher donated by the Sandown Park Hotel. Four of the six clubs scored prizes, with our ladies team of Pam Cotton, Lyn Bate, Janet Jackson and Jill Croom winning the Lucky Team prize.
What a wonderful day - a delicious lunch, plenty of cards and the opportunity of meeting fellow Probus members in such friendly competition. Many thanks to our organiser extraordinaire, Jill Croom, and to all who have made this event the success it is. Without Jill's ongoing inspirations, it would not make such memorable events possible. Thanks also to our Tournament committee of Janet, David, Brian, Alan, Bill and Jill.

INAUGURAL PROBUS 500 CARD TOURNAMENT, 1st July 2013.

Photos and commentary courtesy of Pam Cotton and Jill Croom.

Our Club hosted a 500 Card Tournament of 8 games for forty players at the Sandown Park Hotel on Monday 1 July 2013. Forest Hill Combined, Narre Warren Combined, Syndal Combined and Templestowe Ladies joined with Wheelers Hill Combined for a great day of cards in the spirit of fun, friendship and fellowship.
The day began with registration, welcome, etc. at 9.30am for a 10am start. A prior computerised draw of opponents and tables for the day made rotations easier. Four games of 25 minutes were played (unless the game was won earlier). At noon we adjourned and enjoyed a delicious carvery lunch, with play recommencing at 1pm for a further four games.
Afternoon tea was served at 3pm on completion of the eight games while scores were being tallied onto a computerised scoreboard and then all progressively displayed on a large screen, as they had been all day. There was much discussion and comparisons between players as the final scores were appearing.
Forest Hill scooped the pool. The Four Amigos won the team event - 13 of a possible 16 games. Shirley Jones and Peter Birkett won the pairs event with all eight games while Joyce Batten won the most number of Jokers prize with 17. Janet Jackson won the Lucky Draw for a $50 voucher donated by the Sandown Park Hotel.
The event would not have been thought of or possible without the initial inspiration and dedication to every detail of our Organiser Jill Croom, her Committee Members and helpers plus the keen support of our neighbouring clubs. We are hoping this rewarding bonding experience will become an annual event and look forward to keen competition in 2014.

The Card Club celebrated their 7th birthday on Monday, 30th May 2011. The clubrooms were decorated with streamers and balloons. We had 24 players (6 x 4 tables). Ian Innes had the highest score for the night. Jill split us up into teams (birthday months) and they tallied their scores at the end of the night with October being the winners. The highlight of the night was the supper - sandwiches, asparagus rolls, sausage rolls, tomato, cheese and bacon squares, slices and to top it off Jill baked cup cakes, each with a candle to light for every member. It was a great night, interrupted by the odd balloon busting from the heater.
